Will be talking more on Saturday at Democratic Club of the Conejo Valley about the #RepealMFG policy described in this article. Updating on the ongoing fight despite recent failures of leadership by some in Sacramento.

Repeal Maximum Family Grant

AB 271 led by Assemblymember Holly Mitchell to end the ban on assistance to babies born to poor parents receiving public assistance when their parent was not sterilized or using an IUD/Norplant was held by Senator De Leon in his Appropriations Committee.  Despite making public statements that that he thought the existing policy was discriminatory towards poor children and robbed poor women of reproductive autonomy and privacy that mirrored similar public statements made by Pro-Tem Steinberg, he held the bill citing the costs of the bill and the state’s newly recovering economy.  These costs of AB 271 are calculated as the amount the state saves by denying basic needs help – diaper money – to these kids.  Because they were born to a poor family, they receive $0 in benefits, rather than $122 that a child born while not poor would receive. Please join us in sending the message to Senators Steinberg and De Leon that it is never the wrong time to do the right thing.  Make a Phone Call, TODAY: Please call the Senate Pro-Tem Steinberg and Senator Kevin De Leon to voice your opposition to the decision to hold AB271 in committee.  Senator Steinberg’s phone number is: (916) 651-4006.  Senator De Leon’s number is (916) 651-4022.

Today is the deadline for the Maximum Family Grant to be voted out of the California Senate Appropriations Committee. These Senators need to hear from you!

Maximum Family Grant repeal hearing scheduled for Friday! Ask Senators to bring this bill to the floor by signing the petition!

Call on Senator De Leon to Pass AB 271 TODAY! #RepealMFG

Join us for a day of action to get AB 271 (Mitchell) off of the Senate Suspense File before next week’s deadline.

Here is what you can do:

1) Make Calls.

  • Call Senator De Leon’s LA office. You can reach his office by phone at 916-651-4101

  •  If you live outside of LA and in a district office of another Senate Appropriation’s Member, call their office too!

Sample Script: “Hi, my name is ———- and I am calling to urge the Senator to support AB 271 and to allow it to come to a vote before the entire Senate.  AB 271 repeals the MFG rule, which makes very poor children even poorer and inappropriately dictates women’s reproductive choices. Not passing AB 271 will mean much higher future costs to the state related to medical care, foster care, homelessness, and poor educational outcomes.”
